China ranks No. 2 in aiding Cambodia's town, sub-district elections

China ranks No. 2 in supporting the upcoming town and sub-district elections in Cambodia, by donating equipment worth 600,000 U.S. dollars, according to latest press release issued by the National Election Committee (NEC).

Japan tops the donors by contributing 2.9 million U.S. dollars, while Australia trails China by donating 500,000 U.S. dollars, it said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng said here on Thursday that the kingdom needs a total of 13 million U.S. dollars for the elections and the government can only afford only half, which means that millions are still needed.

The NEC has registered 273,788 new voters so far, which stands for 47 percent of its registration work. The committee expects to register another 300 thousand new voters before Oct. 20.

In 2005, around 6.7 million out of the kingdom's 13 million population were registered for election. In 2006, the total number of registered voters is to reach 7.3 million.

The upcoming town and sub-district elections are a preparation for the general election of the country in 2008. NEC has invited 1, 283 supervisors from domestic and overseas NGOs to watch the process to ensure its cleanness and fairness.
