Cambodia to set up first trade court

October 04, 2006

Cambodia will establish a special court in 2007 to facilitate the settlement of trade disputes under the requirements of the World Trade Organization (WTO), an official said on Tuesday.

The kingdom entered the WTO in 2004 in request for more trade and investment.

Around 30 judges will join the first trade court, to be set up in Phnom Penh, after having professional training, said senior official at Ministry of Commerce Mao Thora on the sidelines of the inauguration of an Europe Union-sponsored training program on intellectual property rights protection.

Later, the current appeal and supreme courts will set up trade chambers too and similar chambers were also expected to be established at provincial level, he said.

"Business people would like to solve their disputes in the expert field," he added.

Since 1991, Cambodia has seen over 200 trademark disputes which could not be properly mediated due to lack of expertise.
