A high ranking official from the Cambodian Ministry of Interior who is currently staying in Malaysia for his mission to try to bring Heng Pov, the former Phnom Penh police chief, back to Cambodia, will return back to Phnom Penh in the beginning of this week after the Malaysian court decided not to hand over Heng Pov as the Cambodian government requested.
According to reliable source, Neth Saroeun, the deputy-director of the Ministry of Interior, plans to return back to Cambodia on Monday 09 October.
On 06 Oct, the Malaysian court had decided to provide a stay from deportation for Heng Pov in Malaysia until a court hearing will be conducted on 17 Oct at which time, Malaysia will provide a final decision in this case.
A source close the Ministry of Information told RFA that the Cambodian authorities still believe that after the court hearing, Heng Pov will be handed over to the Cambodian authorities and sent back home to face justice where he already received an 18-year sentence for his involvement in the killing of judge Sok Sethamony,
Nik Mohamed Ikhwan Nik Mahamud, the Malyasian council defending Heng Pov, said that he requested the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to extend Heng Pov’s visa while he is awaiting an answer from his application of political asylum and had not received any response from any country yet.
Heng Pov’s Malaysian council did not specify the name of the countries applied his asylum to.
Malaysia does not accept political refugees and it also does not have an extradition agreement with Cambodia either.
