PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Cambodian lawmakers on Tuesday approved the appointment to a ministerial post of the estranged wife of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, a week after he was ousted from his position as head of the royalist Funcinpec party.
The action served as a sharply personal political jab at Ranariddh — who resigned as National Assembly president in March and has been abroad most of the time since then — and effectively publicizes the much-rumored split-up of Ranariddh and Marie.
The appointment of Princess Marie Ranariddh as a senior minister in charge of an unspecified "special mission" was requested by Prime Minister Hun Sen and approved by 83 votes out of 105 lawmakers present in the National Assembly session.
Funcinpec is the junior partner in the coalition government led by Hun Sen and his Cambodian People's Party. Last week, Funcinpec party members voted at a special congress to remove Ranariddh as leader, saying his long absences from the country left him unable to lead the group and that his relationship with Hun Sen's ruling party had caused problems.
Speaking by phone from France last Thursday, Ranariddh acknowledged to The Associated Press that he and Marie are no longer living together. He said he has been living with a "mistress" but declined to reveal who she is.
Speaking about his failing marriage — about which the Cambodian press and government had generally maintained a discreet silence — Ranariddh said that he did not need to file for divorce, since as a member of the royal family, the couple did not have any marriage contract.
"Now officially, regarding the law, I am not married (to Marie)," he said.
Marie could not be reached for comment and was not present during the vote on her appointment.
The lawmakers of the National Assembly — the lower house of Parliament — also voted to approve Hun Sen's appointment of Keo Puth Rasmey, the new Funcinpec party leader — and Ranariddh's brother-in-law — as a deputy prime minister.

Come on Mr 1:26AM!! Do not get angry to Rannarith. According to Western laws marriage is a contract written by a piece of papers signed by both parties and their witness. THe traditional marriage of Cambodia is not good enough if that married was not completed with a piece of papar. Cambodia has also that marriage contract made at the commune level. If during his marriage, he didn't completed with that papar, noone can claim the other party as their husband or wife. They are still boy friend and girl friend for the rest of their live. Their children have been bornt without marriage. Therefore, they cannot claim themselve princess or prince. They do not need to get divorce for this circumstance. This same law is also happening to Hun Sen and his wife. They were married during Pol Pot without the contract. Therefore, their marriage was not genuine and legal. They can live together as partner.
