MobiTel Introduces Modified 3G Phone Network

By Erik Wasson and Kay Kimsong THE CAMBODIA DAILY
Cambodia's leading mobile telephone network MobiTel launched the country's first, though modified, 3G mobile telephone network Friday, company and government official said.

While 3G's biggest draw, the video phone feature—which Prime Minister Hun Sen banned earlier this year—has been disabled, subscribers to the MobiTel service will be able to watch real-time broadcasts of television and have access to a fast Internet connection.

MobiTel General Manager David Sprigs said that five television channels are currently on offer with the 3G service CTN, CTN International, Bayon TV, ESPN sports network and CNBC financial news. Later this year, MobiTel plans to offer a sixth "lifestyle" channel mixing content from diverse source like Reuters news services and Fashion TV.

"We had to look at the technology and see if the video phone feature could be disabled and we had to change our marketing... now we are the only service offering 3G in Cambodia," Spriggs said. "If and when video phones become acceptable again, the feature can be enabled," he said.

Video phones were banned by Hun Sen in May after wives of senior officials, including his own wife, signed a petition saying they were concerned the video technology would be used to send pornography.

At the time, MobiTel officials said they were considering suspending the rollout of 3G, on which they had spent $10 million.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister So Khun said Monday that the ban on video phones will remain in effect but that all other features of 3G are permitted.

"TV on 3G will not be affected by the government order," he said.

Mao Charkya, a technical officer at Telecom Cambodia, the government joint venture land-line company, said that television has been permitted on the MobiTel service because the government already blocks pornography from television broadcasts.

CamGSM, which operates under the trade name MobiTel, is jointly owned by the Royal Group and headed by Phnom Penh Chamber of Commerce President Kith Meng and Millicom International, a Luxembourg-based corporation. CTN is also owned by the Royal Group.

There are numberous other issues for Khmer Society to improve other than wasting time or self indulgent act on controlling Khmers communication needs.

But, ah Hun went along with bitch BurrRany because for a Hun he can goes to VN to download images as he pleases. Also, we knew ah Hun cannot up the 3G phone because he cannot give up betting on soccer or gambling habits via the internet. The citizens are restricted on the use, but not for the CPP.

It is hard to believe that obstacle to the technological progress can be made by just a few people. This technology-illiterate woman and her friends in the FCC (First Chumteavs Club) have got their logic mixed up. Images can be sent by the current GSM phones using the media message service (MMS). No need for their Husband Excellencies to see the video, they can just go and see the real things through their existing network of facilitators. The video feature in the 3G technology is not banned in other countries, as it is one of the main features of this new technology. Even if it is banned it will probably be for a security reason, such as military installations or other sensitive areas.

People who managed to get close to those powerful women in the FCC were surprised to find that their conversations were not the kind for the educated persons to enjoy. Despite their lack of logical reasoning and educational insight, among other things, the First Chumteavs wield a great deal of power over their husbands. As they say, if the husband is a Colonel the wife will be a General. Cambodia's destiny is in their hands.

Bun Ranny and her high culture is stink! If she can't even tell her husband AH HUN SEN to stop smoking then she has no business in controlling the free flow of information!

Cambodia don't need a smoker like AH HUN SEN to set role model for Cambodian children! Cambodia don't need a smoker like AH HUN SEN to give speech at the ceremony or in front of public schools and University to show that he tough, strong, and bully!

With every puff of smoke during the speech at the ceremony or public schools, AH HUN SEN is giving a free advertisement for the cigarette company and will definitely attracted more Cambodian children to smoke and more Cambodian will die from smoking related disease!

AH HUN SEN needs to listen to himself first before listening to his wife!

If those smiling and greeting elderlies do not put on their show of respect for Bun Rany then they will be beaten up by her two bodyguards later or they will not get any rice donations from Cambodian Red Cross. Why need two bodyguards, and possibly many more, if Bun Rany thinks she is among her loyal supporters?

People with guilty conscience do not feel safe anywhere, so they need dogs armed to the teeth to protect themselves. She thinks she is a role model for girls and women in Cambodia. She thinks she is very intelligent by banning the video feature of 3G phones. But her lack of intellectual thinking is for all to see, except for her kowtowing supporters. She is just a powerful, filthy rich, ugly (thanks to the facelift operations, it helps a bit), greedy and alleged perpetrator of Piseth Pilika's murder.

The 3G phone was baned in Cambodia not because of their concerns (Chumteavs Club) for our khmers cultural condition, but the phone company didn't contribute to those privat personel Red Cross pockets----that is why the deal was off.

If those Chumteavs really are concerns about our khmers culture will be used in unappropriate manner why they were not react any things when the Viet try to blend our own culture to show off last time in Phnom Penh?. They all are absolutely blured while they were watching that show.
