Some 50 vendors working next to Monivong Bridge protested in front of the Interior Ministry on Thursday afternoon against their proposed eviction, which is slated for today. Nearly 550 vendors at Kbal Thnol market were notified Monday by the municipality that they are to be evicted today to make way for a second bridge. Police allowed the 50 protesters to squat near the entrance to the ministry. Vendor Ngy Touch, who has been selling groceries at two stalls for 10 years, said she wants to get $4,000, not the $700 she has been given to leave. "I would not have a career anymore," she said. Vendor Mao Thy, 36, said all the vendors are opposed to the new bridge. Phnom Penh Deputy Governor Mann Chhoeun said Thursday he was not sure whether the eviction would still go ahead today.
