Sixteen former employees of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights have filed two lawsuits against CCHR President Kem Sokha in Phnom Penh Municipal Court accusing him of embezzlement and defamation. The so-called "Commission for Seeking the Truth of Staff Within CCHR" filed a corruption lawsuit Oct 10 and Friday it filed the defamation lawsuit, said the group's spokesman Hong Huong. The defamation lawsuit refers to comments made by Kem Sokha in which he claimed the group was out to destroy CCHR and could be politically motivated. Court clerk Prak Savouth said he received the lawsuits. CCHR Deputy Director Pa Nguon Teang said CCHR is regularly audited and that its budget, funded by the US Agency for International Development, is properly managed. He also said that Kem Sokha's personal opinions about the ex-employees were not defamatory. Kem Sokha could not be reached for comment.
