A 25-year-old man suspected of stealing a gold necklace in Kompong Thorn province's Sandan district was beaten to death Sunday morning after being dragged off a police motorcycle by a mob of angry villagers, police said Monday. Provincial penal police officer Khieu Channy said that the man, whose identity has not been released, was pulled off the back of a police motorcycle at around 9:30 am Sunday as he was being driven to the district police station 45 km away. He was then lynched by dozens of villagers, Khieu Channy said. Police had arrested the man and another man in his 30s Sunday on suspicion that the two had broken into a villager's home in Tumring commune Thursday and stolen a gold necklace, Khieu Channy added. Police managed to protect the man in his 30s, whose identity also has not been released, from the villagers but were unable to save the 25-year-old victim from mob justice, he said.
