The National Assembly on Tuesday starts its debate on the military service bill. The bill requires Cambodians of both sexes 18-30 years old to fulfill their military duties.
Under the new bill, it's mandatory for men to serve in the army for 18 months and women can serve voluntarily. In today's session, the lawmakers from the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the FUNCINPEC party support the bill while the opposition party opposes it.
Opposition lawmaker Eng Chhay Eang worries the military duty will lead to corruption and unfair practice. He also says the law is not necessary since the country is at peace.
Minister of Defense, Tea Banh disagrees by saying that the bill has addressed the punishment for those who try to manipulate the law.

To SRP!! I just like to give you advice that, you should introduce a law before this year to limite spending by each party and each candidate during election. Each party must declare their spending after election. If they spent more the limited by the laws, their winning seat will be called invalided. This law is very strict in some countries of the western world to combat with votes buying and corruption. If the candidate has spent a lot of monies during his election, offcourse he wants his monies back when he win the seat. This law is also to give good candidate without financial back up to be able to participate as well. This law have to be very well debated and very well written so that there will be no future translation into other meanings. Indeed, SRP should introduce a lot of law already during this term to strenghten the human right and free speeches and also law which banning one person to be Prime Minister of more than two terms. At present, how many countries has allowed this kind of leadrship to stay in power more than two term? China ?No, Vietnam? No, USA ?No, France? No, etc.........CPP will be also happy to change their rudless leader.If you do not introduce, who else will do for CAmbodia? Some law, you can repeal, reamend or re-instate OK

This is just another way for the CPP Hun Sen to social engineering the young generation to become as corrupt as they are. Think about it..
These young men have no future as a civilian, so why not give them a job and at the same time teach them to kill their family for speaking out on democracy....

Dear 2:56AM, be positif. We must tried to introduce things which are not happening. If say so negatif, please go to sleep and let Hun Sen sell Cambodia to vietcong for ever!!!!!! Each of must contribute something which will make Cambodia into a State with Law. China has been ran by centuries in Chinese ways, why, they can adopte western style now? Even their houses are now very western style. We must move forward and stop saying negatif and stuck up attitude if you want cambodia to develop!!!WE leant sciences, technology, laws etc... from the west, we are wearing western style jacket, drive tehir motor vehicule, fly their airoplane, why cannot we adopte their good laws to combat corruption? Cambodia government is supported by donation money. How can they have money to support large arm force? Can those young boys and girls have education while the serve? Some families are depending on their son or daughter. Can the government support their families?
The real question is what is the benefit for the government to have such a large arm force? To protect CPP?
It is very impractical for Cambodia to build military and force draft at the movement.
As we all know, the country is very poor.
What does this military expansion do for the country's progress? Nothing. Can protect border? No only, go to
protect Hunsen regime. They're calling for more young draftees to brainwash like they did in the Khmer Rough and get these people to swear loyalty to Hunsen.
Hunsen regime will advance Cambodia society better by giving them scholarship and improving education access. Cambodia won't improve because it has strong military that serve no purpose, only education force will make Cambodia better now.
If we are to be great, there is only economic and science for us. Military is not a choice, we're surrounded by powerful nation, it is better to keep low and use the international law properly to resolve inter-national conflicts.
I laugh too at those wooden boats. Man. That is crazy. other country have warships and automatic machine gun and Cambodia send it's army out with a Canoe and paddle.
Yes. NO doubt. Cambodia can do no harm to anybody. Just stick to education and sciences. With the injustices now If I am a woman, I would be too scare to join the army with all those perverted man who learned from the best, the Commander in Chief, Hunsen.
