Khan Keomono, vice-president of the department of public information of the National Election Committee (NEC), said that the NEC could extend the period for the voters’ name verification and the vote registration processes for the upcoming April 2007 commune election.

Tep Nytha, secretary-general of the NEC, explained that the decision to extend or not is based on the verification of reports sent to the NEC by the communes. If the verification shows that in a particular commune, there is still a large number of people who have not yet registered, the NEC will decide to allow these communes to continue the registration process.

Tep Nytha said: “We received information from NGOs and political parties. We are currently asking, through the offices of the secretaries, for the commune council to evaluate the results of the registration in the communes, and the number of people who have not yet registered. The NEC will then evaluate this situation and decide on 16 October whether to extend the registration process or not, [if it were to be extended] which locations the extension will apply to, or if additional technical help should be provided.”

Kuoy Bunroeun, SRP MP from Takeo province, welcomes this decision made by the NEC on the extension the registration period. He also added that the NEC should think about providing additional secretaries to help [in registration offices] and providing sufficient number of copies of forms [required for registration].

Dear NEC officers,
It would be highly appreciated for your efforts if you all can consider to extend the registration period as our cambodian people who mostly are very poor need alot of encouragement and tolerance for them to exert their right. People want to participate very much in the election but because poverty and low education as well as difficulty in registration process, they are easily getting frustrated to join. But if we are in the encouraging and facilitating position for them, I'm sure they will be very happy to join in the process. I would appreciate your compatriotism. We all are khmer, we need to do all the best thing for khmer and cambodia.

It seems NEC could be influenced after all if only the opposition employed approriate tactics.
