Newly-installed Funcinpec Party leader to become Cambodia's deputy PM

Newly-elected President of the co-ruling Funcinpec party Keo Puth Rasmey will be appointed by the government as Deputy Prime Minister, Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec's Secretary General told reporters on Saturday at the party headquarters.

Princess Marie, wife of the just-ousted party head and Prince Norodom Ranariddh, will be appointed as senior minister in charge of special mission of social works.

The National Assembly will vote in favor of their appointments next week, Chhay said in the presence of Funcinpec's major senior officials including President Keo Puth Rasmey, First Vice President Lu Lay Sreng, Second Vice President Prince Sisowath Sirirath, as well as senior ministers Hong Sun Hout and Veng Serey Vuth.

"We already requested to Prime Minister Hun Sen and Cambodian People's Party (CPP) to vote to support these senior members and Hun Sen agreed," he said.

Keo Puth Rasmey, 54, is Cambodia's Ambassador to Germany. He is husband to the youngest daughter of former king Norodom Sihanouk.

On Wednesday, in addition to Rasmey's election, Minister of Rural Development Lu Lay Sreng was elected as the first vice- president; Prince Sisowath Sirirath, who was former Minister of Defense and former Ambassador to the United Nations, as the second vice president; Nhiek Bun Chhay re-elected as the secretary general; and Ranariddh appointed as the historic president of the party.

Ranariddh was removed for his long overseas stay made him unable to handle the party issues and his unwillingness to cooperate with Hun Sen led to difficulties for the party to co- rule the kingdom with CPP.

Hun Sen and other major CPP leaders congratulated the election of new leaders of Funcinpec, while Ranariddh rejected his title and prepared to file a lawsuit against Nhiek Bun Chhay for breaking the party's by-law to convene the election.

Royalist Funcipec was established by Sihanouk in 1980 to fight against the Vietnamese troops. It won the general election in 1993 to form the kingdom's first democratic government, under which Ranariddh was First Prime Minister and Hun Sen the second. In 1997, the prince was removed from his position in a coup engineered by Hun Sen, who in 1998 won the election and headed the cabinet ever since.
