KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - The wife of a fugitive Cambodian ex-police chief who was arrested in Malaysia after fleeing murder charges applied to the High Court to halt his deportation on Thursday, state media said.
The official Bernama news agency said Ngin Fotheavy claimed in an affidavit that her husband Heng Pov feared he would be tortured and killed if he was deported to Cambodia. She also asked the court to order Malaysian authorities to produce the 51-year-old, who is in police custody after being arrested on Tuesday outside the capital Kuala Lumpur on charges of overstaying his visa.
Ngin Fotheavy said her husband entered Malaysia from Singapore on September 1 using a diplomatic passport and had informed Malaysia's Foreign Ministry that he would be staying here for one month while applying for political asylum.
Her counsel Nik Mohamed Ikhwan Nik Mahamud said he had appealed to the foreign ministry to extend Heng Pov's visa pending the outcome of his asylum application to another unnamed country, but had received no response.
"We are worried about his safety if the Malaysian authorities decide to deport him. Heng Pov strongly believes he would not get a fair trial in a Cambodian court," he said according to Bernama.
Heng Pov was convicted and sentenced in absentia on September 18 for conspiracy in connection with the killing of municipal court judge Sok Sethamony, who was shot in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

Just want to confirm..Don't forget that Heng Pov did really committed many crimes. He is without doubt a bad guy. But wish that He pov would not be sent to Cambodia, it's not because Heng Pov is an innocent guy, but because we just want Heng Pov to reveal more that who is the boss behind him...

May I beg Malaysian Govt pls dnt send heng pov back to Cambodia.Yes he was guity for some parts but we need him to live on and bring light of justice to all Cambodians. I believe Hun Sen is the one that has made him this way...Take him back is like taking the soul of Cambodians.
