A number of Funcinpec party members who serve as commune and sangkat officials, and who are faithful to Prince Norodom Ranariddh had reacted for the first time to express their opposition to the removal of the prince from his position as president of the party. They promised to continue their support to the prince when he will form a new party in the future.
You Sithol, a 52-year-old permanent representative in the sangkat of Kraing Pongro, Khan Dangkao, Phnom Penh, said in reaction to the extraordinary congress held on 18 October, and which was not recognized by the prince, that it was organized in disrespect to the [party] by-laws and violates the internal rules of the party.
You Sithol said: “One can see that this situation was created to wrestle the position away from the prince. We will always support the prince.”
Tep Rady, first deputy chief of Kok Roka sangkat, Dangkao, Phnom Penh said in that the organization of the extraordinary congress on 18 Oct was done in a hurry: “For me, I still maintain the same old position. Prince [Ranariddh] has the popularity to lead the Funcinpec party.”
A number of local officials at the same commune above, as well as a number of others whom RFA interviewed on Friday, maintain the same comment also because they claim that the new president, Keo Puth Rasmey, which was elected to replace Prince Ranariddh, is someone they never heard of before nor do they know about his past.
You Hockry, second vice-president of the National Assembly, issued a letter on 20 Oct which RFA received a copy, addressed to Heng Samrin, president of the National Assembly, declaring that Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec secretary-general, wants Funcinpec MPs to support the result of the congress, if they want to preserve their MP position.
He added that the party coup must be resolved in court first, and that the parliament coup [suggested by Nhiek Bun Chhay] will affect the honor of the highest lawmaking institution in the country.
You Hockry said: “Nobody should come and meddle, and dirty [the situation] … they should respect the rights of each member of parliament.”
Nouv Sivutharo, Funcinpec spokesman, said that the new party president and the two vice-presidents are planning to meet local activists in 10 important locations in order to explain the event leading to this extraordinary congress.
Nouv Sivutharo said: “We firmly believe in our party members once our top leaders will meet and explain to them [the situation].”
Prince Ranariddh had declared on Thursday that he does not recognize the result of the congress and that he promised to sue the outcome of the congress.
