On 16 Oct 2006, Thung Thea, an activist of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party was killed at close distance range by Long Sopheak, the younger brother of the Ponhea Krek district CPP deputy governor Long Theam. Thung Thea was killed on the spot with a bullet on his head.
Sam Rainsy, opposition leader, visited the family of the victim on 17 Oct, in the Khsak village, Popel commune, Ponhea Krek district, Kompong Cham province. The victim’s family members and friends showed up in large number to attend the funeral in spite of the climate of fear and intimidation.
