PHNOM PENH — National Assembly Deputy Chairman Nguyen Phuc Thanh reaffirmed Viet Nam’s policy to maintain a peaceful border with Cambodia during his week-long visit to the country which began on Sunday.
Thanh, who is in charge of national defence and security in the National Assembly, made the statement during his meeting with Acting Head of State and Senate President Chea Sim and repeated the same at his meeting with National Assembly President Heng Samrin on Monday.
"We have always wanted to share a peaceful, secure and co-operative border with Cambodia for mutual development under the principle of respecting the sovereignty and national territory of each other," confirmed the senior legislator.
Thanh added that Viet Nam strictly follows the high-level bilateral commitments of "Good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and sustainable relations."
He expressed his wish to further co-operation between the legislatures of the two countries.
During these meetings, both parties expressed satisfaction at the fine development of multifaceted relations between the two countries. They described the recent setting up of the first land border markers as a positive step for resolving the remaining differences on border demarcation between the two countries.
Earlier this week, the Vietnamese delegation from the NA Committee for National Defence and Security held separate talks with its Cambodian counterparts in charge of home affairs, national defence, inspection, public work, and law.
The two sides exchanged experiences in compiling legal documents and discussed issues related to security and national defence.
The working sessions focused on measures to boost cooperation between the two legislatures. They agreed to exchange annual visits of experts on national defence and security and boost efforts in seeking a common voice in issues of mutual interest at multilateral forums in the region and the world.
On Wednesday, the Vietnamese delegation met Acting National Defence Minister General Ke Kim Yan and Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Minister of Interior Sar Kheng separately. At these meetings, joint measures to curb terrorism and cross-border crimes such as drug trafficking in the interest of security and development of each country were discussed.
The Vietnamese delegation is expected to pay working visits to several provinces and cities in Cambodia before returning home on Saturday.
