Two policemen were killed and a third was seriously injured when a robbery suspect threw a grenade at them in Kompong Thom province, Provincial Police Chief Mao Pov said Sunday.

The officers were searching one of several robbery suspects in Prasat Balang district Friday evening when another suspect, hidden in the shadows, tossed the explosive, Mao Pov said.

"The grenade attack occurred while frisking a suspect," he said. "Another suspect in the darkness threw a grenade at the police."

Commune police chief Den Yuthveng, 45, officer Chhuo Chheng, 22, and robbery suspect Heng Sin, 43, died at the scene while deputy commune police chief Phal Thoeun, 42, suffered a broken thigh and knee and shrapnel wounds to the abdomen, Mao Pov said.

The officers had been called to catch a group of armed men who had been threatening villages with robbery in Sakram commune's Veal Trinorl village. The attack occurred shortly after 8:30 pm.

Phal Thoeun is being treated at Kompong Thom Provincial Hospital.

Mao Pov also said one suspect in the group, whom he declined to name, was arrested the day after the attack, while as many as three more in the group remain at large.

"We are very sorry that our police were killed by the grenade attackers who we believe previously broke out of jail in Preah Vihear province and sneaked into our Kompong Thom province," Mao Pov said.

THis kind of society is going to be in Cambodia all the time as long as Hun Sen is still the Prime Minister because he has harboured this kind of terrorist at all time to scare people off.
