(Kyodo) - The fourth East Asia Forum opened Wednesday in Siem Reap, northern Cambodia.
Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong told Kyodo News that the main theme for the forum is East Asia integration.
Recommendations made at the forum will be presented at the East Asia Summit next month in the Philippines.
Some 100 vice ministers, secretaries of state, senior officials, diplomats, and academics from the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, plus Japan, South Korea, and China are taking part in the forum.
Hor Namhong said the development gap among the member states remains a major challenge.
"To address the overall development divide in our region is another top priority in our process of building the EAC (East Asian Community). And while we may not be able to achieve equality of development, we should attempt at least to reduce the gap between Northeast and Southeast Asia to the maximum," he said.
