A man was shot in the buttocks by police following the abduction of a woman and a high-speed car chase late Tuesday evening that ended when a vehicle burst into flames, witnesses and police officials said.
The chase began at Than Suor Snooker Club on Street 134 when Chhor Vipolyden, 23, and two other men allegedly forced a female staff member into a red Toyota Corolla at gunpoint at 8:10 pm, a police official said Wednesday.
"We saw one of them dragging a girl into the car. The other one pointed the gun at her and the next one was waiting inside the car to drive," said a Prampi Makara district deputy police chief, who asked not to be named.
"They drove all over the city.... They didn’t stop so we fired at the tires to burst them, and they still didn't stop," the officer said.
The deputy police chief added that police did not intend to cause a fire or to shoot Chhor Vipolyden, but bullets ricocheted as they were shooting at the car's tires.
He added that the two other men are still at large and that Chhor Vipolyden will be charged for threatening the female staff member and for using an illegal weapon.
The owner of the Than Suor Snooker Club, who also declined to be named, said that he heard an argument between two groups of men over his female employee, Phal Linda, at around 10 pm on Tuesday, followed by three shots fired by police in front of the club.
"I heard so many gun shots. As many as 10 bullets," said Sok Seyha, 21, who lives on Street 146 where the chase came to a halt.
"When I came out of my house, I saw a car was on fire already."
He added that the gunfight started about 1050 pm.
The charred red Toyota Corolla sports car was impounded at Prampi Makara police station on Wednesday.
Chhor Vipolyden was asleep and handcuffed to his bed at the Phnom Penh Referral Hospital on Street 134, across the street from the Than Suor Snooker Club, and was unable respond to questions Wednesday.
