Transparency International (TI) had just published its 2006 ranking of countries classified according to corruption.

In this list, TI considers Cambodia as one of the worst country in terms of corruption, and it gives Cambodia a rank of 151 out of 163 countries.

The only countries ranking lower than Cambodia are: Bangladesh and 4 African countries such as Congo, Sudan, followed by Iraq, Myanmar, and Haiti which ranks last.

Cambodia was given a Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score of 2.1 out 10 and a confidence range between 1.9 and 2.4. The country with the lowest corruption in the world is Finland which received a CPI score of 9.6 from TI and has a confidence range of 9.4 to 9.7

[Note: What is the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) used by TI?

The Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries in terms of the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among public officials and politicians. It is a composite index, a poll of polls, drawing on corruption-related data from expert and business surveys carried out by a variety of independent and reputable institutions. The CPI reflects views from around the world, including those of experts who are living in the countries evaluated. Transparency International commissions the CPI from Johann Graf Lambsdorff, a university professor based in Passau, Germany.]

Corruption is a part of Cambodian culture. They cannot quit it. It's part of their evryday life. Look at Khmer International Airport at Phnom Penh. The Airport police ask tourister for money. If you do not give them a few dollar, they will try to make somethings difficult for your trip. It's true story!

I agreed. They asked me money for their coffee. But they didn't ask my son, his birhtplace in US passport was in Thailand. They thought he is Thai.
Anyway, talking about the country for least and worse corruption, I could hardly believe USA was not ranked in the top 10 of least corrupted countries. But I'm not surprised to see Cambodia at number 150.

If they counted Airport INS and Police, and Costume Officiers asked for money (bribes) from Cambodians who live outside Cambodia and come to visit their motherland, Cambodia should be ranked No 163.

I heard an interview of the adviser of Hun Sen,Om Yin Teang, on RFA , he said only Cambodian people could rank their country regarding Corruption.
I am a CAMBODIAN Mr. Om Yin Teang, regarding the Corruption , I rank Cambodia NUMBER 163.

To Anonymous at5:58 PM ,

do you want everybody said that Cambodia is good Country.
No way, look only at Phnom Penh Airport, most Khmer officials there asked for bribes openly.
If TI just ranked Cambodia # 110 on Corruption , most Khmer leaders will proudly continue to be corrupted.
We're not ashamed as a Cambodian, we use TI ranking as a learning tool, and Cambodian Governmemt must find a better way to fight corruption .We're not expected that Cambodia could abolish 100 percent of corruption, but at least Cambodia should their will to fight it. If not , Cambodia will never get out of the Begger Status Country as proclaimed by the US Ambassador in Cambodia.
