Phnom Penh - Thousands of Cambodians turned out on Thursday to see King Norodom Sihamoni light a torch at the capital's Independence Monument to commemorate the anniversary of Cambodia's independence from France in 1953.
The ceremony was attended by the nation's most senior politicians, including Prime Minister Hun Sen, National Assembly chief Heng Samrin and Senate leader Chea Sim.
Sihamoni did not speak at the ceremony, but state television later read a statement from Sihamoni's father, former king Norodom Sihanouk, reminding the nation that Cambodia gained independence in 1953 - a year before the rest of Indochina was officially granted independence in 1954 at a meeting in Geneva.
In his statement, Sihanouk, currently in Beijing undergoing routine medical treatment, paid tribute to the Cambodian people and Cambodian "guerrillas" who helped establish independence.
"Independence was established by Cambodians themselves. No foreigners helped Cambodia," Sihanouk said in the statement.
Sihanouk, who turned 84 at the end of last month and abdicated in favour of Sihamoni in 2004 citing ill health and age, is credited as the father of Cambodia's independence from France.
The ceremony also marked the anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
Independence Day is marked with a national holiday.

For so long most stupid Cambodian people that I had met over the years had attributed everything to the Vietcong for Cambodia independence! These stupid Cambodian people reason that because the Vietcong defeated the French at Dien Bien phu that is why all Indochina got her independence!
Any stupid Cambodian people would like to go eat Pho 53, Pho 54,and Pho 79! Even the Viet fish sauce bottle has Cambodia map on it!
