Ok Bun, Ministry of Commerce's secretary of state, refutes reports that Cambodia's garment industries will be threatened after the World Trade Organization approves Vietnam memberships.

"Vietnam's membership will not affect Cambodia's garment industries", Ok Bun said, adding that the government are taking necessary measures to prevent Vietnam from monopolizing the market.

Last week, WTO officially approved Vietnam to become its 150th member.

Based in Geneva, the organization aims to increase international trade by promoting lower trade barriers and provide a platform for trade negotiations for its members.

On Tuesday, Robert Taliercio, a prominent economist, told reporters that Vietnam would also compete with Cambodia for market space.

"Although there is no data yet on whether Vietnam's entry into the world Trade Organization this year will hurt Cambodia, it will be a significant challenge to the garment industry's competitiveness next year", said Robert Taliercio.

Meanwhile, president of Cambodia Free Trade Union of Workers says that Cambodia needs to improve its effort to tackle corruption for the industry to stay competitive.

“It’s not Vietnam’s membership in WTO that’s the problem, its Cambodia’s corruption that is threatening the garment industry”, Chea Mony said in an interview with VOA.

Currently, there are approximately 286 garment factories in Cambodia, and in 2005 alone, the industry export reached $2.2 billion.

What khmer should be most worried is the corruption in the quota of products. IF CHAM PRASETH, SOK AN STILL COMMIT SUCH A CORRUPTIONS, GOOD COMPANIES WON'T COME TO CAMBODIA. We cannot prevent vietnam from being integrated in WTO, if not today, it still happens tomorrow. The only thing is to be ready to reduce or eradicate corruption. Please tycoon, Cham praseth and sok an, are you full now?? It's time for you to do some good things for our people!!!

Cambodia's economy is threaten not just Cambodia garment industry by the corruption. Right now Cambodia's economy is kind of lucky that it has been on the rise, that because of the retriction on Chinese's textile export to the U.S; and the Cambodia's economy was already at the bottom (it can't get much worse than that). So it has nowhere to go but up. Cambodia government must not use corruption as a mean to get things done. They must fight corroption and strengthen rule of law. Cronism is the thing of the past; it's obsolet. Any leaders in their right mind would not think corruption is a good engine for economic growth. Cambodia must change if it wants to continue growing. Cambodian leaders must not take everything for ganted until the water rising up their nose. They must learn to preparing themselves ahead of time and Cambodian leaders can do it.
