(Kyodo) - Cambodia's Prince Norodom Ranariddh said Monday he will set up a new political party and is waiting for official permission from the government.
The "Norodom Ranariddh Party" will be set up to take part in next year's communal elections and a general election in 2008, the prince said.
His statement came nearly a month after he was ousted from the royalist FUNCINPEC party, which he called a "party coup."
"I have no choice but to set up a new political party with my own name," he told reporters in a two-hour news conference in Phnom Penh.
The prince said he is naming the new party after himself to ensure another party is not "stolen" from him, he said.
The prince was ousted as president of FUNCINPEC, which was founded by his father and former King Sihanouk in 1981, in an extraordinary party congress convened on Oct. 18. Later, Keo Puthrasmei, half-brother-in-law of Ranariddh, was chosen as the new leader of the FUNCINPEC party, leading to speculation of a split occurred inside the royal family.

The prince urged the Interior Ministry to expedite the process for his party's registration, saying the next year's communal elections "will not be free and fair" without his party's participation.
Ranariddh filed an application to form the new political party Oct. 27 and the ministry is now reviewing the application.
Led by Ranariddh, FUNCINPEC won the most votes in the 1993 U.N.-sponsored general election. Since then, however, the party has gone on to play an increasingly minor role in coalition governments.
FUNCINPEC fared poorly in the 2003 general election, leading to a split inside the party, with a majority faction led by the prince and another led by Nhiek Bun Chhay, who is closely associated with Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Since earlier this year, Hun Sen has suggested that FUNCINPEC seek a new leader he would be more willing to work with.
