An international human rights group expresses grave concern towards human rights workers and journalists working in Cambodia.

In a statement Tuesday, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) based in Hong Kong says the Cambodian government has failed to identify those groups of people who threatened to kill a specific human rights worker and a journalist.

According to AHRC, a 44-year-old Cambodian human rights activist, who has been actively campaigning against the illegal land grabbing in Ratanakiri province, received a death threat message through his mobile phone on 15 November 2006.

Previously, AHRC has also reported a similar case where Soy Sopheap, a CTN TV’s news anchor received a death threat letter dated on September 7. Soy Sopheap criticized the Cambodian military commander over land grabbing activities in the country.

AHRC urges the Cambodian government to take action and to investigate into the matters.

Khieu Sopheak, Ministry of Interior spokesman responds to the statement by saying that "the Cambodian government always try to protect all Cambodians and human rights workers, otherwise, they would not be able to do their jobs.”

They cannot possibly identify their own people as the perpetrators, and they cannot just arrest innocent people to take the blame because such a dirty trick will come to light sooner or later. That would be even more embarassing in the eyes of the international observers.

The only way out is to make some official statements. But, because they are not intellectually well-equipped to come up with a reasonable explanation (they can get away with anything inside Cambodia) their statements in response to the international reaction appears as though they have been prepared by patients in the mental institution. Well, these CPP officials are also mental, so let them make a fool of themselves.
