Hun Sen Vows To Reward Asian Games Medalists

Prime Minister Hun Sen has promised sizeable rewards to athletes who win medals at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, a National Olympic Committee member said Wednesday.
NOC cabinet secretary Chhuong Leng said that the prime minister will award $5,000 to any athlete who takes home a gold. Silver medalists will receive $3,000 and each bronze will earn $2,000, he said.
"Prime Minister Hun Sen wanted to encourage everyone to work harder," Chhuong Leng said.
He added, however, that he found it unlikely that Cambodian competitors would win medals, saying that many of the 45 other nations competing in the games are fielding superior athletes.
In all, the NOC will be sending a 17-strong team of athletes and an even larger team of 19 official delegates to the Dec 1 to 15 competition, he said.
Chhuong Leng added that the athletes would be competing in seven disciplines: track and field, swimming, snooker, wrestling, taekwando, judo and beach volleyball.
The Asian Olympic Committee is providing funding for 32 Cambodian participants and Cambodia is footing the bill for the remaining four, he said.
"We could not afford to send many athletes to compete in the games," Chhuong Leng said. "If we spent our own money, we would have been able to send only five athletes."
NOC President Thong Khon and Secretary-General Meas Sarin are already in Doha and were unavailable for comment.

The PM knows that Cambodian athlets will be hard to get medals that's why he promised. It would be better to encourage athlets by giving some money before they go to Doha then they can eat healthy food.
