South Korea Agrees To Create Cambodian Stock Exchange

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun signed an agreement Monday with Cambodian Finance Minister Keat Chhon committing his country to helping create a Cambodian stock exchange by the end of the decade, a senior government official said.
Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said Roh had signed the agreement after a summit with Prime Minister Hun Sen to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral trade and economic ties.
Cambodian officials said earlier this year that they hope to get a stock exchange up and running by 2009.
"South Korean experts came here and studied the situation and concluded that Cambodia could not set up a stock exchange without help," Kanharith told a press conference after the summit.
South Korea was integral in setting up a stock exchange in neighbouring Vietnam.
Other agreements reached Monday between the two leaders included a slew of signings boosting trade ties, especially in the areas of construction, industry, investment and infrastructure development as well as an agreement for South Korea to distribute 31 million dollars to build the IT network in Cambodia.
Kanharith said Hun Sen and Roh had also discussed ways to offset a serious trade imbalance between the two nations by increasing Cambodian exports to South Korea.
South Koreans comprise Cambodia's most prolific tourist group and its citizens run more than 600 companies in the kingdom, according to government figures. Between aid and trade, South Korea is a major contributor to the Cambodian economy.
Roh is scheduled to end his visit on Wednesday.
