A representative of the Kachon village community, Veun Say district, has accused the official from the Ratanakkiri forestry department of threatening to arrest community members when the latter discovered a cache of precious wood hidden in the forest. The villagers suspect that the wood had been stolen from those destined for the construction of the new National Assembly building.
On 24 Nov, the representative of the community handed over a complain letter to the Ratanakkiri governor asking for justice in this matter.
Phay To and So Phorn, community representatives, said: “Wood is hidden outside, I am a member of the community and I clearly saw it by myself. If Samdech Hun Sen does not help and intervene, our [community] forest will be destroyed.”
So Phorn added: “We are complaining about Mr. Sao Vanny, the forestry department official, he threatens to arrest and handcuff us.”
In their 22 Nov 2006 complain letter, stamped by the president of the Kachon commune council, Sao Vanny ordered police officers to arrest community representatives who prevented the transport of 10 sheets of precious woods used. The community discovered the sheets of wood hidden in a cache in the forest.
