Liberal International, an alliance of more than 80 liberal political parties from 60 countries, awarded their 2006 "Prize for Freedom" to SRP leader Sam Rainsy on Thursday at their 54th annual congress in Marrakech, Morocco. The UK-based organization awards the prize to an individual who has "made an outstanding contribution to human rights and political freedoms," according to its Web site. Previous prize winners include Corazon Aquino of the Philippines in 1987, Vaclav Havel of Czechoslovakia in 1990 and Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma in 1995. Keo Phirum, SRP deputy chief of cabinet, said Sam Rainsy spent several days in Paris before landing in Morocco and that he will travel back to Europe after the four-day congress. Sam Rainsy left Cambodia on Nov 3 and is not expected back until Nov 21. Keo Phirum said Sam Rainsy spends time abroad to stay connected to his international supporters.

Congratulation Mr. Sam Rainsy. I hope you will do great work to inspire new rising Khmer politics of what it really means to be a civil servant, a servant of the people.
What a predicament. While staying connected with international supporters, some party may not have enough time with voters who are all in Cambodia and yearn for full time leaders.
