Prince Promises To Renew Country With New Party

THE CAMBODIA DAILY

Prince Norodom Ranariddh has begun rallying support for his new Norodom Ranariddh Party, and is promising to build a modern-day Cambodia comparable to the country during the Angkorian era.

The Norodom Ranariddh Patty is ready to compete in the April commune elections and 2008 national elections, and is confident of success, Prince Ranariddh said in an statement issued Friday.

"I am confident that the Norodom Ranariddh Patty will become a new choice and hope for the supporters because the party intends to collect students, intellectuals, workers and civil servants, who are nationalists and real royalists based on the cleanest principles...to build a prosperous Kingdom of Cambodia like the Angkorian period," he said.

The party is producing 2,000 signs bearing the NRP logo to be distributed among district and commune offices, Ok Socheat, Prince Ranariddh's public affairs adviser, said Sunday.

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday appeared to weigh in on the prince's party, which was launched Thursday, when he chided an unnamed politician for forming a new party under someone else's roof Prince Ranariddh formed the NRP by taking the fringe, ultra-nationalist Khmer Front Party and renaming it after himself

"[The unnamed politician] used to be shade for people to shelter under but now he stays under a cottage. It is very sad," Hun Sen said during a tour of the new National Assembly building.

Funcinpec also took a swipe at the prince Friday, accusing him of putting his private life ahead of professional responsibilities during his time as Funcinpec president, and making money out of the position.

"Everyone knew that when the party was poor, the prince became the richest," Funcinpec claimed in a statement. "In addition, the prince had scandal with affairs with women, which caused Funcinpec to be ashamed," Funcinpec alleged.

Ok Socheat declined comment on the allegations against the prince, referring questions to the prince's new spokesman Muth Chantha.

Muth Chantha said he has not yet been officially appointed and declined comment.
