Ok Socheat, Prince Ranariddh's adviser in charge of information, reacted heatedly and bitterly on Wednesday 15 November to the explanation and clarification by Nouv Sovathero, saying that the Nhiek Bun Chhay group was exploiting the FUNCINPEC [National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful, and Cooperative Cambodia] Party for its personal gains.
Ok Socheat was talking to the media when he strongly blamed the Nhiek Bun Chhay group that "this group betrays the members of the FUNCINPEC Party and exploits this party for its own gains."
Ok Socheat's strong charges against the Nhiek Bun Chhay group was a retort to the interpretative explanation and clarification that Nouv Sovathero made in a bid to take advantage of Prince Ranariddh's account at a press conference held at Hotel Le Royal on 13 November.
In his clarification Nouv Sovathero, spokesman for the Nhiek Bun Chhay's FUNCINPEC Party, asserted that concerning the accusation that the 18 October extraordinary congress was a coup de parti, we would like to explain to His Royal Highness and FUNCINPEC members that comparing the 18 October 2006 extraordinary congress to the 18 March 1970 coup d'etat staged by the Marshal Lon Nol group was wrong because these are two completely different events. Lon Nol staged a coup d'etat to overthrow His Majesty Samdech Norodom Sihanouk by discarding the country's motto: Nation, Religion, and King. He replaced it with a new motto: Khmer Republic. As for the 18 October extraordinary congress, in principle, it was held to correct all the weak points deemed most necessary for the survival of the FUNCINPEC Party. The 18 October congress continued to preserve the motto: Nation, Religion, King, and Sihanoukism. We are different from Prince Ranariddh, who has conspired with sycophantic officials to dissolve the FUNCINPEC Party and also to secretly set up an individualistic party by the name of Norodom Ranariddh Party with a totally different motto: Freedom, Democracy, and Territorial Integrity.
Nouv Sovathero continued to expose Prince Ranariddh's remark about His Majesty the [former] King having handed over the FUNCINPEC Party exclusively to him, calling it a big boast. In reality, he said, His Majesty the King was of the opinion that the prince was his son and that he could succeed him in leading this party along the path he had pioneered. On the contrary, the prince mistook that gesture and regarded the party as his personal possession.
Moreover, the prince considered FUNCINPEC members as his servants or his indentured personal slaves, which was completely contrary to the manner with which His Majesty the King had treated them. The former King always expressed deep respect for and affection to his party members when he headed FUNCINPEC.
Concerning Prince Ranariddh's remark to the media that he would not hesitate to forsake the Royal Family and become a commoner in order to continue his political career, Nouv Sovathero stated that at first glance it would appear that the prince is very patriotic, but in reality he is a kind of person very much addicted to power. Moreover, the prince said with ambiguity that if he must renounce the Norodom lineage, he would not hesitate to do so. This shows that if he dares to give up even his Norodom bloodline, nothing would stop him from deserting the FUNCINPEC Party.
Nevertheless, Ok Socheat rejected this explanation and clarification yesterday, pointing out that if Prince Ranariddh was addicted to power he would not have resigned from his position as National Assembly chairman.
Prince Ranariddh tendered his resignation as chairman of the National Assembly in early March 2006 after he was viciously attacked and humiliated by Hun Sen, who exposed his corruption and adultery.
In this case, it is seen that what forced Prince Ranariddh to submit his resignation in panic from the post of National Assembly chairman was actually his shame and cowardliness. In the end, the Nhiek Bun Chhay group with Hun Sen's support staged a party coup to seize even the prince's leading role in the party.
However, concerning the controversial dispute between Nhiek Bun Chhay and Prince Ranariddh, people see that in the end both of them would have nothing left except the hurt because of their idiocy.
