U.S. policeman who killed self over child molestation accusations cremated in Cambodia

2006-11-14

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Cambodian authorities on Tuesday cremated the body of an American police officer who shot himself to death while jailed on child sex abuse charges, officials said.

The body of Donald Rene Ramirez of San Francisco was cremated at a Buddhist pagoda in the capital Phnom Penh Tuesday, said Yim Mongkul, a mortuary employee at a hospital where Ramirez's body had been kept following his suicide on Oct. 31.

Cambodian police arrested Ramirez for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl. During his detention at an anti-human trafficking police station in Phnom Penh - and before he could be tried - Ramirez managed to grab a gun his guard had left nattended and used it to kill himself, police said.

His body was transferred for storage at the hospital morgue before it was taken for cremation Tuesday.

Jeff Daigle, a U.S. Embassy spokesman, said Ramirez's family had asked for the body to be cremated. He said the embassy will arrange for the ashes to be sent to the family later.
