Police in Battambang town briefly detained 20 teenagers accused of vandalizing a park named after Interior Minister Sar Kheng, officials said Sunday. Police detained eight teenagers Friday night and 12 the previous evening, Battambang district police chief Thuch Ra said. The youths, who have all been released with a warning, were accused of destroying benches and smashing streetlights in Sar Kheng Park in previous weeks, he said. "We have to take them to the police station to educate them and we have to stop them sitting in the park and behaving in a disorderly manner at midnight," he said. Provincial police chief Kang Sokhorn said police sent an additional four youths to the provincial court Wednesday. The four are accused of robbing people of money, bicycles and mobile phones, he said. They have all been charged with robbery and detained at the provincial prison, he said. Kang Sokhorn said the police campaign was unrelated to a warning by Prime Minister Hun Sen last week that government officials would lose their positions if they could not crack down on youth gangs. Yin Mengly, provincial coordinator for local rights group Adhoc, said the roundup is proving popular among residents of the town.
