Violence perpetrated in the Cambodian society, especially against innocent civilians, has earned Cambodia the ranking of “Failed State” by the International Community.
A Failed State is defined as a state controlled by anarchy in society, such as land disputes which is not resolved according to the law, used of armed forces to put down peaceful demonstrations, lack of application of International standard law, and corruption such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, briberies, destruction of natural resources, etc…
At the beginning of December, The Economist Intelligence Unit published a report regarding the state of democracy in the World. The report also includes a prediction for 2007. In this report, Cambodia is ranked 105 among 167 countries surveyed. This ranking was based on 5 topics: election status and political pluralism, government functioning, political participation, political culture, and civil liberty. Cambodia scores less than 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the best score, i.e. Cambodia ranks below average.
The four countries which joined ASEAN last are also ranking above 100: Vietnam is 144, Laos 155, and Burma 163.
In March 2006, Dr. Mohamad Mahathir, former prime minister of Malaysia, expressed his regret in an interview with the Far Esatern Economic Review, about the situation in some ASEAN countries, such as Cambodia. Mahathir believed that these countries could be pushed to bring changes based on close relationships (with other ASEAN nations), however, it is unfortunate that some leaders are worried about their personal interests only.

We have a very scary friends.
Wow. A failed state. That is BAD. If the world sees Cambodia as a failed state, then what sort of message is the government sending out, for them to see it as is? In my oppinion, Cambodia is not a "failed state". However, due to corruptions at the highest level, it is bordering that.
Cambodia needs change, and for it to happen, leaders must take responsibility for their own action, and look forward to helping their own people first, then themselves.
Why do we hear that voting in the city is pretty o.k , but not in the rural areas? Bribery seemed to be big there.
Small number of people. Everybody know everybody and it was just extremely tough to vote for different candidate other than for The ruling party. Can you feel the level of intimidation from those Mae Srok and Mae Phom toward our innocent people? and what 3-4 thousands reils handed out to the villagers in exchange for a ballot from each person the night before the voting taking place? Oh boy! sounds like we got The Thacksin's Style in Cambodia.
Not surprised. For those who defend Ah Sen needs to hear what other nation about Cambodia. Cambodia is a failed state because her leaders are worried about their personal ineterest only. Pretty soon the leaders themselves will fall of their power and face justice for their corrupted acts.
This is a shame for Cambodia. Can you imagine Cambodia is called a "failed state" in the int'l community? To me it is a very strong word and very hurtful too. A "failed state" is a state of incapable of running its own house. To some extend it is very true in Cambodia. It is not that the people cannot do it; it is because the system of corruption and political interference from this gov't that incapacitate the Cambodian people from doing the right things.
I ponder long will it takes for this government to get the message? What kind of government are they running now?
Misguided Vietcong policy adopted by AH HUN SEN VIETCONG SLAVE GOVERNMENT have made Cambodia into a "FAILED STATE".
AH HUN SEN is too blind to see and too dumb to understand what the hell is going on because he is too busy taking order from Hanio!!!
