Cambodia fires 39 officials for importing right-rudder cars [- Punishment is not proportional to the crime]

December 06, 2006

The Cambodia government on Wednesday fired 38 Banteay Meanchey provincial customs officials and one police commissioner, because they allowed more than 800 motor cars to enter the kingdom illegally.

They closed their eyes and permitted over 800 right-rudder cars to be imported from Thailand into Cambodia, Om Yentieng, personal advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen and president of the Anti- Corruption Committee, told a press conference at the Council of Ministers.

"They must face the administrative punishment and be removed from their positions without salary. We call this crackdown as the Boat-Racing Operation 2006," he said, adding that the dismissal also aimed to teach a lesson to other customs officials.

Measures would have to be applied later for other places in order to safeguard the sub-decree signed by Hun Sen On Mar. 18 to ban import of right-rudder vehicles into Cambodia, he added.

The Anti-Corruption Committee was established in Aug. 2006, and this has been the first time it carried out a heavy-hand operation.

Cambodia has not passed its own anti-corruption law yet, whose draft is currently under debate.

This action shows clearly that Cambodia is a lawless state. Mr. Om Yentieng, the chief of corruption commission, takes action base on his feeling and intention because there is no anti-corruption law yet in Cambodia but he claimed that it was an action corruption of the custom officials. When there is a law there is no implementation, but there is not law, there is implementation. Strange? Please implement law, not implement your imagination.

Surprise! This is a show that the CPP want people to see. The government will fire those 38 custome officers who majority of them are pro-SRP party. there are only a few of them are belong to CPP party. And the top commander is CPP officer getting all the money. the rest of them get fire didn't know nothing about the corruption. And they got nothing. This a political motivation and discrimination.

Why choosing Poipet customs official and waited for that long stupid? Check Bvet, Svay Rieng. Don't you do anything about it for the officials who smuggle drugs into Cambodia? Politically motivated for real.
