PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the ousted leader of Cambodia's royalist party, has been summoned to court to answer allegations that he cheated his former party, his lawyer has said.
Liv Sovanna told AFP Phnom Penh Municipal Court had issued a summons asking the prince to appear on January 5 to defend himself against claims that he sold the Funcinpec party headquarters without permission.
Liv Sovanna said the charges were politically motivated, adding, "The prince will go to the court to explain everything to show the court that he is innocent."
Phnom Penh Municipal Court charged Ranariddh last week with abuse of confidence after Funcinpec filed a lawsuit accusing the prince of selling their headquarters and pocketing 3.6 million dollars from the sale.
Ranariddh, the son of respected former king Norodom Sihanouk, could face between one and five years in prison if found guilty under the abuse of confidence charge.
The prince has dismissed the cheating and graft allegations, and is due to return to Cambodia from France via Malaysia on Friday or Saturday to confront the charge.
The court's chief Chiv Keng confirmed it had summoned Ranariddh, but declined to elaborate.
Ranariddh is also under investigation for adultery -- a crime in Cambodia -- after his estranged wife Princess Norodom Marie Ranariddh filed a complaint.
His streak of misfortune began in October when Funcinpec ousted him as leader of the party he had headed since 1993.

AH PRINCE RANNOGOOD sure know how to act infront of a camera! Now just imagine how would he act when he find himself in Prey Sar prison!
Samdech Krom Preah : " Oh god Allah helps me now. I am not the cheating people but ah Hun Kvak (Hun Sen) is the most cheating, corruption and criminal people in Cambodia. Fire him, now!"
I don't get why these Khmers drubbed only Ranaridh while the rest do the same or even worse?
Why stay mum when Hok Langdy and
Hun Sen killed the girls after they slept with them? So these guys
do and why pluck one guy?
Who expects the best from the most brutal like Hun Sen and Hok Langdy?
Samdach Krom Preth should quit politic all together. Krom Preth includes Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, and Chea Sim.
