(Kyodo) - Cambodia's opposition Sam Rainsy Party elected its first woman as secretary general of the party on Monday.
Mu Sochua, a former minister of women's affairs, was elected secretary general about two years after she has joined the party.
She quit the royalist FUNCINPEC party in 2004 and joined the Sam Rainsy Party thereafter.
She had joined FUNCINPEC in 1995 and was minister of women's affairs from 1998 through 2003.
Mu Sochua said she is committed to work hard for the party and to push for victory in the communal elections in April.
Sam Rainsy, president of his self-named party, said Mu Sochua was well-suited to the position, citing her competence and work ethic.
Mu Sochua will also serve as the party spokeswoman, Sam Rainsy said.
The Sam Rainsy Party is the third major political party in Cambodia, after the ruling Cambodian People's Party and FUNCINPEC.
In the 2003 general election, the CPP of Prime Minister Hun Sen won 73 seats, FUNCINPEC got 26 seats and the Sam Rainsy Party gained 24 seats.
Cambodia holds general elections every five years.

Beware of politicians use gender sogar coated agendas.
Wasn't she FUNC once?
Loyalty and faithfulness is the moral of relationship,so is in politic.
Congratulations to Sochua and hope she does not have to jump ship any more.
Raingsy's move have surely alienated many original courageous founding members who shouldn't have been ignored.
Bravo to the SRP for electing Mu Sochua. Since KI has always posted article from the Cambodia Daily, wonder why it didn't post the article on Son Chhay accepting $10,000 "unconditional compensation" from Hun Sen after the 1997 Coup in which Mr. Son Chhay admitted to accept claiming not knowing why he was given the "gift" to vote for UNG HUOT as the puppet of Hun Sen. Gandhi was right on when he said "politic without principle is a deadly sin."
KI, as a pro-opposition outlet, must be viewed as such.
Hey, hold your horses Principle Base Observer! The article you are keen to see is posted. Claiming to be an observer needs to observe. Failed to observe cannot be claimed as observer. Are you still observing?
If KI is pro-opposition party, So what??? CPP can access many TV channels, newspaper, and radio. This is the only media outlet that opposition party has. CTN and TVK never talk about opposition party doing a good thing. Their news only show the negative thing about RS party. I personally never watch CTN or TVK. TVK is belonging Ah Hun Sen and their news anchors speak like communist people. CTN is under hun sen control and speak and act like their master.
