Hun Sen, prime minister of Cambodia and vice-president of CPP, indicated his CPP party strong standing in continuing its alliance with Funcinpec led by Keo Puth Rasmy, its new president. The alliance cannot lack one or the other of the two parties, and it starts from the current mandate, all the way to future mandates in order to insure the political stability and the development of the country.

During the inauguration of a bridge in Kompong Thom on Saturday, Hun Sen stressed his party standing: “CPP is continuing its partnership with Funcinpec, even though Funicnpec is reforming its structure. CPP still considers Funcinpec as its necessary partner in its current situation, all the way to future mandates, in the event the CPP is victorious at the election.”

On the same occasion, Hun Sen was also pushing local CPP and Funcinpec officials to cooperate with each other to resolve water problems and land issues for the people, since the two parties are partners in the current government.

Hun Sen was also criticizing Prince Ranariddh, former Funcinpec president who moved to form a new political party. Nevertheless, Hun Sen promised to maintain the alliance with Funcinpec led by Keo Puth Rasmy.

Nouv Sovathero, Funcinpec spokesman, welcomes this news: “We hope that Samdech Prime Minister’s words constitute an encouragement to all Funcinpec leaders and members.”

At the same time, Ok Socheat, special advisor to Prince Ranariddh, president of the fledgling Norodom Ranariddh Party, criticized that the alliance between the CPP and Funcinpec led by Keo Puth Rasmy will not last long.

Ok Socheat said: “If Funcinpec does not receive any seat [at the National Assembly], there will be no more alliance, especially with the 50+1 system. When they (CPP) win to obtain 50+1 majority, they will not need any alliance anymore.”

Sam Rainsy, the major opposition leader in Cambodia, said in reaction to the internal issue involving the CPP and Funcinpec, that he has no comment. However, he believes that his opposition party will win the election in order to lead the country. He promised that, by then, he will choose for partner, parties which truly serve the people: “…Therefore, we depend on the people’s strength to vote for the victory of SRP to lead the country.”

On 29 Nov, Funcinpec party led by Keo Puth Rasmy had declared that Prince Norodom Ranariddh had been kicked out from his position as historical president of the party. The Prince is no longer a party member, nor is he Funcinpec MP from Kompong Cham, after the prince became the president of the legal NRP party which is looking for vote support during the upcoming 2007 election.
