Soldier Opens Fire Turning Dance Party Deadly

THE CAMBODIA DAILY

A 23-year-old garment worker was killed and six others wounded when an RCAF soldier opened fire Wednesday evening at a dance party in Kandal province's Muk Kampul district, police said Thursday.

District deputy police chief Koang Siphal said that two bullets hit Yin Savorn from a volley fired by the soldier, who brandished an AK-47 assault rifle after a dance floor dispute.

Koang Siphal said that the soldier, identified only as Cheth, was a well-known gang member and a guard at land belonging to Moeung Punlok, son of CPP Defense Ministry Secretary of State Moeung Samphan.

"He has already ran away," Koang Siphal said of the suspect. He declined to comment on the reason for the argument that led to shooting.

Keu Lai Seap, investigator for the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said that the dispute might haw occurred after Yin Savorn and Chet’s groups began vying for space to dance.

Keu Lai Seap said that police should have no trouble arresting the suspect, regardless of his links to powerful officials.

Contacted Thursday, Moeung Samphan said he was unaware of the shooting and could not provide a telephone number for his son who also works at the Defense Ministry.
