The ex-wife of a Ministry of Agriculture official was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay $15,000 compensation by Phnom Penh Municipal Court Judge Chhay Kong. Ly Sodalis, the ex-wife of Ith Nody, CPP agriculture ministry undersecretary of state, was found guilty of cheating Huot Chhou out of $15,000. Huot Chhou's lawyer Neang Hay said his client alleged that Ith Nody told him to give the money to Ly Sodalis in exchange for a license—which was never issued—to operate a sawmill. Charges against Ith Nody, who has denied receiving the bribe, were dropped Tuesday. Ly Sodalis has been in Prey Sar since 2002, serving time for an unrelated charge; she maintains that she gave the money to her husband. Ith Nody could not be reached for comment.
