Prime Minister Hun Sen has accused those who oppose his government of inciting Cambodian farmers when the price of rice drops down, and of inciting city dwellers when the price of rice goes up.

In a speech given on Wednesday, in Battambang, Cambodia’s rice basket, Hun Sen blamed the drop of rice price on the crop abundance and on OPEC cartel countries.

The prime minister said: “Normally, farmers want high price for their rice, when the price of rice rises, it causes problem to those who do not produce rice such as factory workers, teachers, government employees, soldiers, city dwellers. With the high price of rice, they are demonstrating against it, that’s what the opposition group is saying. This is a movement to incite city dwellers, hence they say factory workers, investors, city dwellers are demonstrating against the government for the high price of rice. When there is a drop of rice price, they go and incite the farmers instead, saying that the price of rice is too low and selling 10 kilograms of rice cannot even pay for a set of clothes, so now they incite the farmers. In fact, the price of rice on the International market depends on the price of oil, we cannot lower the price of oil if OPEC does not want to lower it.”

Sam Rainsy: Government wants to keep people in the dark

Sam Rainsy, opposition leader told RFA about some of the issues the government does not want people to pay attention to or to know about: “I went to meet farmers in the countryside, the farmers are complaining that right now, during the harvest, the price of rice is at its lowest, but the price of goods they have to purchase, such as gasoline, fertilizers, is extremely high. Because of corruption, the middlemen can create rain and sunshine, they can impose a lower price of rice, while transporting the same rice to sell in the cities at its highest possible price. The middlemen can create rain and sunshine only because they have money to pay bribes to corrupt government officials. Therefore, Samdech Hun Sen overlooked one factor: the middlemen, he is underestimating and he cannot grasp the situation fully.”
