Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos PMs Discuss Development

By Kay Kimsong
THE CAMBODIA DAILY

The prime ministers of Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos met this week to discuss the development of an economic triangular area incorporating the three countries' mutual border provinces.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said during the meeting, which ran over Monday and Tuesday in the Vietnamese town of Dalat, that that plan will include the Cambodian provinces of Ratanakkiri, Mondolkiri and Stung Treng. He added that he wants the provinces to become a major economic engine by 2015 by focusing on mining, agro-industry and eco-tourism.

"The triangular area is of high potential if compared with other areas," he said during a press conference in Vietnam broadcast on state-run TVK on Thursday.

The triangular area includes three of Laos' border provinces, and four border provinces in Vietnam.

Hun Sen urged investors to pump cash into the area, saying it contains gold, metal and bauxite.

"We cannot develop this area alone," he said. He also said that Cambodian rivers inside the triangle have great potential for both eco-tourism and hydroelectricity.

Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh announced at Phnom Penh International Airport on Wednesday that a working group made up of ministers from the three countries will meet in March to hammer out the details of the project.

"We, together, have a plan to attract business people to invest in agro-industry in these provinces," he said.

He added that Australian mining giant BHP Billiton will invest between $500 million and $1 billion in exploring for bauxite in northeastern Cambodia. The company, which is partnered in the project with Japanese firm Mitsubishi, could invest an additional $3 billion if it begins mining, he said.

Cham Prasidh announced in October that the two firms had been given permission to explore for bauxite, gold and copper on up to 1 million hectares of available Cambodian land, mostly in Mondolkiri and Ratanakkiri.

Thong Khon, secretary of state at the Tourism Ministry, maintained that the triangle project will aim to protect the ways of life of hill tribe people living in the three provinces. He did not explain how this would occur.

Seng Teak, country director of the World Wildlife Fund, said there are 1 million hectares of protected forest in Stung Treng, Ratanakkiri, Mondolkiri and Kratie provinces.

"I think development is necessary, but an environmental impact assessment needs to be considered," he said.

That is Ah Sen's excuse for ceding land to Ah Youn. What will Cambodian people benefit from those development anyway? Nothing! In fact Cambodia wild life will be destroyed. More deforestation will occur and the people there will lose more land to the land grabber tycoon. How sad! The only people the benifit from this development is a Ah Youn and Ah CPP leaders who suck the blood of the poor. Long live Khmer people to defeat Ah Youn Communist Hun Sen!

Will we give up all places where we are unable to develop? Base on the reason of lacking money to build country and give up territory then whole land of Cambodia should give away to neighboring countries. So stupid leader, he openly invation of state territory now. Is it a kind of invation of state sovereignty whic this man repeatly talked in the past?
PM does not stop corruption but claim for lacking of money to develop the country, what kind of leader are you?

We khmer know now that Son-of-a-bitch (SOB) Viet dog Hun Sen is Yuon (Viet) and what he is doing now is just to keep ceding everything to YUON until Khmer is gone.

Whatever AH HUN SEN! I say most Cambodian people have more brain than a dark skin inferior bastard like you!

How many tycoons or millionaires in Cambodia who have hundred and million of dollars and can't develop with Ratanakkiri-Mondolkiri-Stung Treng regions which are filled with rich natural resource such as gold, metal, and bauxite!

The concept of cooperation between Cambodian and the Viet is a very old concept! For example, Uncle Ho told King Sihanouk to cooperate with the Vietcong to fight American by allowing the Vietcong to use HO CHI MIN trail in Cambodia and the end Cambodia got carpet bombing from American military.

The Khmer Rouge cooperated with the Vietcong to attack American army and corrupted Lon Nol government army and at the end, Cambodia invaded by the Vietcong in 1979! ahahahahha.

In any cooperation with the Vietcong, Cambodia must take full control of any cooperation within Cambodia sovereignty and the Vietcong must not be allowed to dictate everything as they see fit! But AH DARK SKIN INFERIOR BASTARD HUN SEN don't even have the fucken brain to see that far for his eye is blind!

at the first glance i agree with the idea to develop economy all along the border. But after i have studied many years about the Cambodian & Youn political culture relationship, I finally conclude that the cooperation with Yuon just like Chakk Angko York Angkam. Khmer people like to live in quietness with peace, but the Yuon like making noise and fighting. So sooner or later, Youn merchants will dominate in these three provinces; Rattanakiri, Moundulkiri and Steung Treng. In 5 or 10 years, the majority of residents there will be Youn while Khmer become minority and slaves. Wot about shit is Ah Hun Sen doing???????????????
