CPP uses government officials for its election campaign (1)

As a current practice, the ruling CPP is using government officials, whose salaries is paid with taxpayers' money, for its campaign for the 2007 commune council election. For example, according to pro-CPP newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea dated 17-18 December 2006, Duch Sovannary, an Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Relations with Parliament, actively takes part in the election campaign for the CPP in Kompong Leav district, Prey Veng province. He is using equipment, vehicles and gasoline provided by his Ministry to do a partisan work. In each CPP-controlled Ministry, the concerned Minister is the head of the CPP cell in that Ministry. Similarly, each CPP-appointed Ambassador is the head of the CPP chapter in the country where the concerned Ambassador is posted. Click here for details in Khmer.

Campaign for the 2007 election has already started (2)

Even though the official campaign for the commune council election scheduled for 1 April 2007 is due to last for only 15 days, from 15 to 30 March 2007, the major political parties have already started to campaign at the grassroots level. The CPP is holding electoral rallies every day in all Cambodia's provinces as regularly reported in the party mouthpiece Rasmei Kampuchea, while SRP Members of Parliament continuously campaign in their constituencies. Opposition leader Sam Rainsy holds up to seven meetings a day in several provinces and districts throughout the country.

250,000 cars in Cambodia / Continuous increase in gasoline smuggling (2)

In 1995 there were only 10,000 cars in Cambodia. Their number has since increased to 250,000. However, according to Customs statistics, the amount of imported gasoline has remained practically unchanged over the last 10 years: around 150,000 tons a year. This indicates that gasoline smuggling, which is organized by some government officials and their business associates, has reached astronomic proportions (see KI, 30 October 2006: "CPP-controlled gasoline companies making huge profits").

Ranariddh's inconsistent position in regard to his alleged marital status (1)

Former Funcinpec President Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who is facing an adultery lawsuit filed by his official wife Princess Marie Ranariddh, has adopted an inconsistent position in regard to his alleged marital status: On the one hand he pretends that he has never been officially married to Princess Marie, but on the other hand he has started legal proceedings before the Cambodian Court to seek divorce from the same Princess Marie.
