Phnom Penh's skyline will be lit up by 35 tons of fireworks on Sunday Dec 31, New Year's Eve, compliments of the Cambodiana Hotel, which was scheduled to receive the $60,000 shipment of fireworks from Singapore on Friday, hotel management said. Billed as probably the largest fireworks display ever in Cambodia, the event is being organized purely for entertainment value. Cambodiana Hotel Executive Director Shyam Nath Nair said on Thursday. The hotel was recently purchased by local tycoon Kith Meng and the fireworks display, which will launch at midnight to ring in international New Year, will be broadcast live on CTN television, which is also owned by Kith Meng. Though it is illegal for ordinary members of the public to use fireworks—a rule that has been in force for several years—Municipal Deputy Cabinet Chief Soun Rindy said that the hotel obtained special permission. "Fireworks are not bad for city residents," Soun Rindy added. Philip Setkao, president of the Cambodian Hotel Association, said such events we're necessary to attract tourists during the holiday season.
