A message from Mu Sochua, newly elected SRP Secretary-General

Monday, December 25, 2006

Dear friends and colleagues,

As mentioned in my remarks before the votes, it is a great honour to be chosen for the job, as a woman and a new member of SRP. I am proud to be on the same journey with you and millions of our compatriots who want and deserve nothing else than freedom, a life free of fear and intimidation and injustice. I see no other party that will deliver this hole package but SRP.

The praise should go to all our activists at the base and our leadership at every level, inside and outside the country. The hard work, commitment and passion that you all have come from your sense of duty and responsibility to the nation.

The task of the SG is to make the SRP machinery work and that task can never be achieved if one works alone or with just a few groups of selected people. I believe in team work, I believe in reaching out, I believe in the power of ideas and actions. But with a real focus.

2007 and 2008 are the major challenge. SRP is ready because of our internal reforms. Every villlage and commune election has paid off with SRP being the only party that checks and monitors the NEC during the registration period of 24 days. The NEC is on its toes because SRP speaks out against irregularities and bad performance. SRP is ready for 2007 because of its base. The power of a political party is its base.

As other parties are crumbling or figthing to survive or empowering themselves at the cost of the poor, SRP is empowering the poor to take action for change.

When I travel to the base and see our party sign infront of a hut, in the most distant and remote village, tears come to my eyes. If the owners of that hut has the courage and pride to show that they belong to SRP, our simple duty is to serve them, to make the light glow not just for the hut but for the entire village.

We have come to the end of putting up our candidate lists for the 2007 elections. We will field candidates in around 1,580 communes out of 1,621 communes. This is an improvement from 2002 when we had candidates for just around 1,300 communes. Considering the huge task of selecting competent candidates-about 20,000 candidates, we are encountering problems in only few communes. The process of selection is a very tedious one as it must be conducted in the most democratic manner. And problems must be resolved in the most democratic manner.

Our teams are in Preah Vihear, Rattanak Kiri, Mondol Kiri and reporting back every day. Yesterday afternoon, our president spoke by phone to a group of supporters in Preah Vihear and this direct communication is a real plus for us and will be a positive factor for 2007 and 2008.

As SG, my main task is to strengthen and reactiviate the machinery so it can be of support to each provincial team. Communicating with the general public, the diplomatic corps and of course our supporters and leaders abroad will be a priority as well.

Our website is updated on a daily basis and the cabinet of the president puts out a newsletter that can be accessed by internet.

We will bring our candidates lists for 2007 to the commune election committee offices (CEC) between 1-3 January. Our lists of party agents will be completed by January 7th. And our training program for party agents and candidates will be running by February. We have already started our "soft"campaign with small community meetings and home visits. Our president travels to the base several days each week and our MPs are with their constituents on a regular basis.

Let me finish this message by sending you the very, very best wishes for 2007. May you reach your goal and may good health and peace be with you and your loved ones.

I hope to have a chance to visit you and share with you our dream of making our president the leader of Cambodia. Let's us all give a V for SRP victory in 2007 and 2008.

In solidarity,

Sochua

I really love your message for the sake of Cambodia. A small change in selecting a woman for this high position means a lot to the Cambodians as a whole. This is a very motivating and inspiring change. This motivation, I am sure, goes to all women in Cambodia and the world. Well done!

Go ahead Sochua and SRP party!! We always support you ever. Your contribution to our beloved country Cambodia will last forever in our mentality and heart.

We believe in you to be the agent for changes in Cambodia.

I love you all.

Many best wishes for 2007. And be with success, success and success.

Knowing Mu Sochua personally, I truly think that SRP has been a good choice in selecting her as the Secretary General. My support is not because of the fact that she is a woman, but her overall ability to be inclusive, the communicate, and to have compassion for the Cambodian people in general. For people to claimed that they support SRP, I suggest for them to support this woman, seek to improve and strive to be the ruling party; not just a good opposition party. One of the failure of the people with fighting spirit is that they tend to always fight and ended up alienating too many people. I have talked to many of the local activists and found some encouraging signs but also some troubling persistent problems with the democrats in general and the opposition party in particular. I commend the work of many of the local activists who uncompromising integrity and passion for the country shall be highly respected. I ask the SRP leadership to take a look at the people at the grassroots as example, have an honest talk with them, learn from them, and try to achieve a better Cambodia together. It's them that will change the country and it's the leaders job the help them make it happens.
