Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the former president of Funcinpec party, said on Friday that he will return back to Cambodia at the end of December to face two major legal charges recently filed against him.

Speaking by phone from France, the prince has accused the two charges leveled by the court against him as actions taken to kill his political life, and that he must return back to Cambodia to resolve these issues.

Prince Ranariddh said: “I am telling you again and again that I have all the necessary proofs that I am not at fault, I am not at fault at all. Therefore, if Mr. Nhiek Bun Chhay wants it, I will go to the court, and secondly … if the court is judging with closed eyes, I will show the national and international opinion the true nature of the Cambodian court.”

The two court cases faced by the prince are: the lawsuit brought by Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec secretary-general, who accused him of selling the party headquarters, the other lawsuit was brought by Princess Marie, the prince’s wife, accusing him of having extra-marital affairs.

The dispute between Prince Ranariddh and Funcinpec started after he was chased out of his position as party president on 18 October.

Following that, the prince was removed from his position as Member of Parliament, and recently, the prince was called in by the court to clarify the lawsuit case brought by Nhiek Bun Chhay. At the same time, the prince has to face also a lawsuit brought up by Princess Marie, his former wife, regarding the monogamy law. The princess accused the prince of martial infidelity and having extramarital affairs.

Prince Ranariddh said that up to now, it appears that his lawsuit about the violations perpetrated within the Funcinpec party has been forgotten.

Chan Saveth, Adhoc human rights group official, said that there are doubts on the independence of the Cambodian justice system which does not resolve the lawsuit brought up by the prince, but it went on to resolve the cases of those who attack the prince instead.

Chan Saveth added that Cambodian politicians appear to show their intention of shamelessly breaking up one another: “… this is the worries expressed by civil society, we are requesting that if the criminal charge is brought up, it should be done in accordance to the law for both sides.”

Recently, MP Keo Remy called the actions taken by a group of politicians who chased out Prince Ranariddh from the party and from parliament, as an ungrateful act. The MP called for an end to the dispute which is taking a turn to the worst.
