A senior Sri Lankan military intelligence official will remain in Phnom Penh to work with police and Defense Ministry officials after a delegation including the Sri Lankan prime minister visited last week, a government spokesman said Sunday. Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith said Major General JJPST Liyanage is here to work on intelligence matters, but could not disclose further details. Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday assured his Sri Lankan counterpart Ratnasiri Wikremanayaka that the Tamil Tigers, who are waging a guerilla war in Sri Lanka to form an independent state, will not receive arms smuggled from Cambodia. Though arms from Cambodia in the past have fueled the Tamil Tigers, Hun Sen said that weapons smuggling is no longer a problem. JJPST Liyanage was due to meet with Cambodian officials including National Police Commissioner Hok Lundy and Defense Minister Tea Banh on Friday to discuss terrorism, Khieu Kanharith said he was not at liberty to discuss the talks. "It’s about intelligence—it means the government spokesman can’t talk about it," he said.
