UNIFEM urges Cambodia to protect its migrating women

PHNOM PENH, 12/05 - The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) here on Tuesday issued a report to urge the Cambodian government to develop comprehensive policy to protect its migrating women from abuse and exploitation.

Female Cambodian workers are more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation than their male counterparts in any cycle of migration, due to gender discrimination, negative mindset on gender roles and relatively lower skills and knowledge, said the report.

It recommended the government to develop a comprehensive migration control system together with the dissemination of information on safe migration, creating safe money transfer and investment systems, providing consul services to migrant workers abroad, and facilitating expatriation and integrating expatriated migrants.

"An effective response is to have comparable and reliable data on the situation of female migrant workers so that we can set up clear policies on regular and safe migration in the upcoming years, " it said.

In cooperation with civil society, the government should introduce and carry out policies, laws and programs to protect the rights of female migrant workers, said UNIFEM regional program director Jean D`unha in the report, adding that discrimination regarding migrants needs to be dealt with.

Popular foreign destinations for Cambodian migrants include Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea, while Singapore and China`s Taiwan and Hong Kong also contribute to the movement of Cambodian house maids in Asia.
