We've Sunk Too Low: Now We Relocate the Souls of the Dead

Letter to the Editor
The Cambodia Daily

So the authorities have decided to relocate crematoriums from the city center to the outskirts, ("Crematoriums To Be Relocated to City Outskirts," Monday, page 1). The places for disposal of the dead are heading to the same location as the living bodies of evicted slum dwellers.

Perhaps the attitudes towards the crematoriums and funeral processions in the city of the people cited in the report reflect how low our morality has sunk. Has materialism so overwhelmed us that we neglect the souls of our dead? And do the dead not deserve better treatment and respect during their journey to the other world?

Perhaps businesses and residents near pagodas in the city center should be reminded that these pagodas and their inseparable crematoriums existed long before them.

They should have known of the smoke and smell coming from those crematoriums before taking up residence there. They should not disturb the existing settings for their own interest and convenience.

Phnom Penh

What soul?

It should not be a surprise at all if they later sell off some of the city pagodas that are located in prime locations.

Suffices it to say that Ah Hun Sen and his cronies regime which is Hanoi-Viet regime in disguise in P. Penh is no longer in disguise. They are showing their true color of being carelessly inhuman, gangster-like style of government that is out to do nothing but DESTROYING anything that is khmer.
