Cambodian government cautions border residents against bird flu

January 23, 2007

The Cambodian government has cautioned its residents in the border area with Vietnam against possible transmission of bird flu, local media said on Tuesday.

Chan Sarun, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, told the people in Takeo province to be careful with the poultry that they buy to celebrate traditional festivals.

"We need to be careful with the poultry imported from our neighboring countries, where bird flu has occurred," the Raksmey Kampuchea Daily quoted him as saying.

"It was easy to face with bird flu. We should not eat uncooked poultry meat and all villagers need to work together with local veterinarians to provide instant information about dead poultry," he said.

However, Cambodia currently does not have any sign of bird flu outbreak, he added.

Meanwhile, he requested all people and the authorities at various levels to observe poultry situation and transportation, especially the situation of wild birds.

Since 2003, bird flu has killed six people in Cambodia.

Yes, I have to give the
administration a lot of credits for
doing a great job against H5N1
deadly virus. Cambodia have the
least fatalies in the region,
second only to Laos. This is
something that should not be taking
for granted.
