Yesterday, Sam Rainsy accused the National Election Committee (NEC) for asking the Phnom Kok Commune Election Committee (CEC) in Ratanakkiri province, to falsify documents in order to allow the CPP to register its candidates in this commune. On January 5, the NEC announced that the CPP was able to register in all communes in the country, i.e. 1,621 communes, before the limit date of January 3, 5:00 PM. Monday, the Ratanakkiri Provincial Election Committee (PEC) agreed with the Phnom Kok CEC, and it rejected the request made by SRP which affirmed that the CPP was not able to register in the commune in a timely manner.
The SRP is sending its appeal to the NEC and plans to bring the case to court. “Our observers reported that the CPP was not successful in registering their candidates before the limit date,” Sam Rainsy declared yesterday during a press conference, he also indicated that he would send his complain about the CEC to the court for falsification, so that the CEC officials involved be sent to jail. The opposition leader wishes that NEC officials be sentenced also. Sam Rainsy appealed to the UNDP to withdraw its technical and financial assistance to the NEC. Tep Nitha, NEC Secretary-General, considers this complain as a threat and he assured that his institution is working according to the law. He said that if SRP observed irregularities, it should bring the case to the NEC rather than to the court.
