Three Cambodian troops arrested for Vietnam gold heist [- Gold and thief boss whereabouts still unknown]

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

A Vietnamese-Cambodian joint police force arrested Monday three Cambodian soldiers for an armed robbery last week when they broke into a gold shop in Vietnam and stole 150 taels of gold and injured two people.

Admitting to robbing Kim Hong jewelry in Hoa Binh hamlet in the border Tay Ninh province, they said they were border troops and had been led by an officer.

Vietnamese police said the boss, who had fled after the crime, was still at large.

They had arrested the three after a four-day hunt in Cambodia together with local police.

The armed group broke into in the shop at 8:00pm last Tuesday, and threatened people inside before escaping with the loot. As they were leaving, a woman in the shop shouted and they fired some 10 shots.

She was unharmed but a man drinking coffee at a nearby pavement shop was seriously injured. A policeman was shot in his hand as he ran towards the crime scene.

The whereabouts of the gold is not known.
